Customer: They have vomited everyday for the past 2 weeks
JA: I'll do all I can to help. Does the vomit look liquidy or foamy? Is there food in it?
Customer: Liquidy mostly sometimes food in it
JA: Could the cat have eaten anything unusual?
Customer: Not from my knowledge
JA: And what's the cat's name and age?
Customer: Well I have 2 cats, so I'm not exactly which cat is getting sick. They are both displaying usual habits ... normal eating and drinking and toilet use.
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: They're going on 6 years

Hello, and welcome to JustAnswer!

My name is Dr. Porter, and I am a companion animal veterinarian with over 25 years of experience, and I really look forward to helping you with the kitties.

Vomiting is concerning and glad that you reached out!

Do they have any soft stool or diarrhea?

Customer

Are they indoors only?

What are their names?

That is cute!

Are they shedding a lot

Are they itchy?

Are they good groomers?

Customer

Customer
I feel like they're constantly grooming

Are they on good monthly flea control (fleas can and do get inside)?

Are they related?

Anything new in the house that they might be fascinated with and chewing on?

Customer
Maybe new plants. No flea control and yes brother and sister from the same litter

Do you have any other pets?

Customer
No other pets

Their recent vomiting together is most likely caused by the same thing. I usually suspect hair ingestion as an irritation as they both have hair in common. It is also springtime which is chuck full of allergens as well as flea exposure. They are related so it makes sense that they BOTH might be allergic to something in their environment this time of year.

Recommendations: for seasonal atopy (allergies) and/or flea allergy

  1. Flea Control: If they have allergies they will be better for it! Fleas do get inside and they are the number one cause of allergic dermatitis and you can at least eliminate this exposure by using consistent flea control. There are OTC topicals like Frontline or Advantage but my preferred is Revolution Rx from the vet as it is low odor and low volume that they tolerate much better when you apply it (don't get so offended).
  2. Zyrtec 10mg-Give 1/2 tablet (5mg) every 24 hours. This is an non-drowsy antihistamine that I use in my own cat for allergies and works pretty well! You might use this seasonally as needed.

Vomiting: You can try them on some Pepcid right now to settle their tummies. If this does not help they may need a little steroid injection from the vet to cool of any hair-related irritations. See below...

CAT DOSE 10#-Give 1/4 tablet to start, then every 24 hours 30 minutes prior to a meal for 3-5 days.

You will need to score this with a small narrow blade into an approximate chunk. Smooth any sharp corners...

Managing hair ingestion in cats:

Since gastroenteritis (or constipation) in cats is MOST often due to hair ingestion the following can help long term:

  • Encourage water drinking
    • Fountains (left off at first)
    • Faucet Drip
    • Cup filled to brim with fresh water
    • Tap v Spring
    • Etc.
  • Hills Hairball Control Diets-high in cellulose bulk to clean GI
  • Groom them-brush often to collect hair
  • Flea Control-do not give them any reason to over-groom!

*****I have had great success feeding a hairball diet!*****
