Customer: A few days ago, we redid some of our flooring downstairs. This is where our three cats spends the majority of their time because their food and litter is down there. It was a lot of loud noises, so obviously the cats weren’t crazy about it. Since then, one of the cats has had a loss of appetite and has been throwing up. I assumed it was due to stress right away, but last night I found some blood within the puke. I got her to eat some wet food but it looks like she threw that up too this morning, there was no blood in it this morning that I could tell. She was playing fine with the laser pointer and doesn’t seem to be too lethargic. What do I do?
JA: A lack of appetite can seem worrying. The Expert will know how to help. Does the cat seem to be in any pain?
Customer: It doesn’t seem like it. I’ve been gently pushing on her belly and she doesn’t seem to react weird and it’s howling or making any distressed noises.
JA: What's the cat's name?
Customer: Tiny
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: That’s all I can think of right now.

Hi-Doc Nelson here with JA - I have been a vet for over 30 years. Please be patient with me as I'm typing up replies as I can't type very fast!
Customer
Of course!

I'm sorry Tiny isn't doing well! Stress can definitely cause vomiting in some cats, and even sometimes with blood in it. Are you able to give Tiny pills by mouth?

Customer
She’s never needed any medicine so we have not tried that yet!

You could give Tiny 1/2 tablet of a 10 mg Pepcid twice daily to help soothe and heal the lining of her stomach. Pepcid (Generic name is Famotidine) is a human antacid you can get over-the-counter at any drug or grocery store.

There are some good You Tube videos that demonstrate how to pill a cat.

Customer
Do you think that I should bring her into the vet or anything today and get her tested for anything?

Withhold food for 24 hours to allow her gut time to rest and time for the Pepcid to start working. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water available.

Having a pet examined in person is always a good idea. Bloodwork could test for any issues with her kidneys, liver, pancreas, etc.

Customer
Okay! Thank you!

Would you like me to continue home care instructions, or will you be bringing Tiny into the vet today?

Customer
Im going to check to see if any vet near me can get her in once they open up! If they cannot, then I would not mind some more instruction!

Good plan! After fasting, make her a bland diet consisting of a 50/50 mix of cooked white rice and boiled skinless white meat chicken. Feed one teaspoon every 4 hours initially, and if no vomiting, then gradually increase the amount fed and the length of time between feedings. If no vomiting for 24-48 hours, then you can gradually start mixing her regular food in with the chicken and rice, and then wean her off the rice mix.

Once she is eating her regular food you can discontinue the Pepcid.

If Tiny continues vomiting, especially if you see more blood, if she quits eating or playing, or if she becomes extremely lethargic, then she definitely needs to see the vet in person.

Do you have any additional questions or concerns?

Customer
I do not believe so!

Sounds good. I hope Tiny starts feeling better for you soon!

Customer
Thank you so much for your time!

You are most welcome!
