Customer: I have a 19½ year old dsh. He is happy, friendly, eats, drinks, pees, and poops. He's losing weight. He has diarrhea of I feed him certain foods and i only use them when he won't eat. He is around other animals, but he asserts himself if he ever needs to. I'm trying to put some weight back on him. I gave up on holistic food that he turns his nose up to, unless he wants to eat that. I've also tried baby food, bland diet, chicken alone, ......
JA: I'll do all I can to help. When did you first notice this decrease in the cat's appetite? How is his energy level?
Customer: Energy level is pretty good. Weight has been up and down. I know he's ancient, but he's still a scrapper.
JA: Does the cat seem to be in any pain?
Customer: Thank you.
JA: What's the cat's name?
Customer: None
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: We just moved States from AZ to CA by car, but he handled it well.

Hello, my name is***** and I am a veterinarian with over 20 years of experience. I'm here to provide you with excellent service. Kindly allow me 5-10 min to review your conversation with the assistant. May I have your first name only, please?

Thank you for your patience! I’m very sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues, but I appreciate you reaching out to us for assistance. Hopefully, I can help.

I’m so sorry None is losing weight and gets diarrhea with certain brands. You must be so worried.

I have a few questions I will ask below that will help me to understand what might be going on with him

  • Has he been checked for thyroid disease?
  • Has his vet mentioned the possibility of lymphoma?

Please be aware I am a licensed veterinarian, but I am not your pet’s veterinarian and cannot examine your pet, so I cannot legally provide you with any specific veterinary medical advice such as diagnosis or prescribing medication. However, I can generally speak to help you understand resources that may help you, advise you to seek medical attention, and provide support.

Without the information requested in my previous response, I can only give you a general answer, but I hope this helps.

Sometimes older cats maintain fairly normal energy levels because they have an overactive thyroid gland and hyperthyroidism can also cause diarrhea, so that is something important to check.  Poor absorption of food secondary to IBD (inflammatory bowel disease, or intestinal cancers like lymphoma can also lead to diarrhea and weight loss.  So those are things to talk to a veterinarian about as well.

This doesn't sound like an emergency, but I would try to get him in to see his vet early next week.

As I haven't heard back from you, I will go ahead and close this out for now, but it can be re-opened anytime in the next 7 days if you have follow-up questions. Just type in the box and hit send.

It’s truly been my pleasure to provide assistance for you and None and I am so glad you reached out. Please keep me informed about None’s condition, if you wish. If you still have more questions about None, I would be happy to continue to assist you. If you need more clarification or if something doesn’t make sense, please let me know and I will try to clarify it for you.

We are always here to help you with any future Veterinary questions that you have. You are welcome to specifically request me if you have any future veterinary questions. Click this link to mark me as your favorite veterinarian
