I have a cat behavior question. I have two male adult cats,
i have two male adult cats, brothers, Stripe and White Kitty, who appeared in my yard at ~ 8 weeks of age ~ three years ago. They were very wild at first and it took several months to trap them and have them neutered by a local feral cat organization. They have remained with me since and I have a full garage set up for them plus a cat door into a full basement where they also have free range. Two years ago another feral started showing up and over time, I trapped him also and had him neutered and he is part of my “colony” and his name is***** was quite injured and needed an eye surgically removed and has some other effects as if he had a related head injury and he does not seem to have an aggressive bone in his body. Although White Kitty is very timid around most humans or sounds, he has typically been the alpha kitty - he is a tad bit bigger than Stripe and often gets a bit rougher with Stripe than Stripe seems to like. White Kitty has tolerated Orange but would occasionally hiss or take a swat at Orange while Stripe and Orange are like two old friends - Orange adores Stripe and follows him all over and they clean and care for each other while White does his own thing. Two months ago, new neighbor moved in next door with tons of noisy kids and two loud dogs and White ran away for a month. He showed up a couple of weeks ago and I watched Stripe aggressively ran him off. I retrieved White, brought him inside and after some initial hissing between the brothers, all was good. Orange just observed. Stripe and White both bum at night; Orange never leaves but waits patiently for Stripe to return. Ever since that month absence by White, even though the brothers get along fine 99% of the time, Stripe has turned on White twice in the past week when White returns early in the am around the same time Strip gets back. With last week's feud, Stripe got injured and I had to take him to the vet for eval of an ear injury that bled. Everbody, cats and humans, were upset that day. I separated the Stripe/Orange team from White for that day, reintroduced them through a metal grid through the cat door, they made up and all seemed good for a week. This morning again, Stripe was already home with Orange when White returned from his nightly outing and I watched Stripe aggressively run White off and heard but did not see the altercation with Orange in tow, observing but not participating. Can you offer any advice re how to restore harmony? I currently have Stripe and Orange locked in my garage with Feliway infusing into the garage and White Kitty is outside in another property about 30 yards downhill But at some point tonight they are going to encounter each other and I was wondering what is going on and how do I restore some normal behavior again? I can keep them physically separated for a short time but not permanently and am mystified re how is it that two of my three feral cats who have lived in harmony for three years are now aggressive and harming each other? Looking for a solution/advice ASAP. Thank you. … read more
