Customer Question
Hi. This began...

Hi. This began 4 days ago (5/29/18) I have an old cat (18yo) and for the past 4 days he's eaten nothing. Also, he's drinking tons of water and then vomiting it all back up a few hours later. He cries a lot, more than usual. I thought maybe he ate something outside likesome weeds or even rat poison! Any idea what these symtoms could be?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Did you see what the cat ate?

No. But I know he eats plant things. But it's never harmed him before.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the cat?

Like what?

Regretfully, anorexia and polydipsia (increased thirst) are danger signs for quite a few disorders. They include the following:

renal (kidney) insufficiency (very important at his advanced age)

hepatic (liver) insufficiency

urinary tract infection involving the kidneys

diabetes mellitus (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen)

Cushing’s disease/hyperadrenocortisolism (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen)

hyperthyroidism (polyphagia/increased hunger is also seen)

hypercalcemia (increased serum calcium level often seen with lymphoma, a negative prognosticator in renal insufficiency, and primary hyperparathyroidism)

electrolyte (sodium, potassium, chloride) imbalances

Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocortisolism)

diabetes insipidus

brain tumor involving the hypothalamus

His vet will need to perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of fasted (for at least 4 hours prior to a blood draw; never restrict water, however) blood and urine tests in order to clarify what those symptoms are signifying. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

the best way to narrow this down is a blood test?
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 19 days ago

Yes, a complete physical exam + blood and urine tests are essential. You'll know within 24 hours if he can be helped. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
