My cat has a very foul odor at his rectum with tan

Customer Question
secretions I tried to clean...
My cat has a very foul odor at his rectum with tan secretions I tried to clean for him, but he was uncomfortable. He has been avoiding me and there does not seem to be much stool in his litter since I cleaned it Friday. It is Monday and I’ve seen him strain a few times. Should I bring him to the vet? He’s 15 years old and medical history includes hyperthyroidism, elevated BUN secondary to Methimazole treatment, and chronic vomiting. Any information is helpful.

Hi there, I’m Dr G and I can help you with your kitty. Poor guy!
I am thinking this is most likely one of a few things.
Constipation. This is common in older kitties with the other diseases he has. They can get really blocked up!
Second would be an anal gland impaction or problem as well.
Third would be dehydration related to one of his diseases, or an electrolyte imbalance. Even other things might be common.
For now, if he will still eat, try adding a tsp. of plain canned pumpkin to his food to increase the fiber. Also, you could add 1/8 to 1/4 tsp daily of Miralax powder (can get at the drugstore) daily to his good. This could help with both anal gland issue or constipation. If he will eat it, adding some low sodium chicken broth or warm water to his canned food to help him eat.
But, he really does need to go to the vet and have his belly felt and maybe a rectal exam done to determine his problem. He may need to have his electrolytes or kidney values checked.
Your vet may take an X-ray is constipation is a concern and may recommend any of the following treatments depending on the problems: SQ fluids, enema, anal gland treatment, new meds.
Does this fully answer your questions? Can I further give you any more info at this time?
