Customer Question
Second opinion] My cat...

Second opinion] My cat sounds very congested. Nothing comes up and she does it more if she plays vigorously. It kind of comes and goes. What can I do to help her?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Strange behavior is often perplexing. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help you. What is your cat's name and age?

Civa and she's about 3 yrs. old. Not too sure because she's a saved cat.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Civa?

She's put on a little weight and that's about it. Very loving cat.

I reviewed your previous conversation with my colleague Rebecca. If "congested" implies that you're hearing a cough, both feline asthma and a feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) infection need to be considered. Because FHV-1 usually goes into remission within a few weeks, if Civa has remained symptomatic - even episodically - longer than that, asthma should be the most important consideration. Civa's vet will want to perform a complete physical exam including a complete blood count looking for elevated numbers of the white blood cell eosinophil (seen in many cases of asthma) and X-rays of her thorax (chest) looking for the tell-tale signs of asthma in her lungfields. If found, treatment usually consists of a glucocorticoid (steroid) such as prednisolone +/- a bronchial dilator such as terbutaline or albuterol. Regretfully, there are no over the counter products of value for these cats. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
