Customer Question
Hi there. I am...

Hi there. I am fostering two kittens. One is being super fussy. Making a Groaning noise when I lay her down. She also has a click when she breaths. She is sweating and passing stool. Any help?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the kitten. What is the kitten's name?

It's a foster so I haven't named her

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the kitten?

Its 8 days old

Hi, this is Dr. Thompson. I’ve been a small animal veterinarian since 2000. Thanks for your question. I understand you have an 8-day old kitten that is groaning and has an abnormal respiratory sound. Is that correct?

Are you bottle feeding the kitten with formula?

Store bought formula. Liquid not powdered

Based on the symptoms you describe, my concern is that the kitten may have aspirate some formula. It's easy to have this happen when bottle feeding. It only takes a little bit of formula getting into the airway to cause problems. I'm glad to hear the kitten is still eating.

Be sure to check your bottle nipples and make sure only a drop comes out when squeezed. Don't squeeze the bottle when the kitten is eating. Go slowly, don't rush and try to not let the kitten rush (I know this can be difficult).

If the kitten stops eating or develops labored breathing, it would be best to take her to see a veterinarian. They will probably want to take an xray to evaluate her lungs for aspiration pneumonia. In the mean time, careful feeding and monitoring her condition should be done at home.
