My cat came home...

My cat came home with a limp tail and he won't let me touch his lower back without growling. He isn't eating or drinking. Gums are pale and he had a small amount of blood from his eyes. But not actively bleeding. He is using the litter box

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Did your cat have a fall?

Not that I witnessed

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is your cat's name and age?

Felix age 1

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Felix?

Only that he was a stray that I took in.

Hi

Dr. Paul Brazzell here

No open wounds? Swellings?

Paul

No open woulds but I feel a little swelling around the base of his tail

Thanks

I suspect we are dealing with a cellulitis (very common location)

He probably is very painful and has a fever as a result

Are you able to take him in today

Exam and antibiotics should sort this out for you

Okay?

Paul

Customer reply replied 29 days ago
Its not cellulitis. I believe he got hit by a car or got into a fight with another cat. However, based on the marks on his fur.. I am suspecting he got hit by a car. He was perfectly fine when he went outside

If he got into a fight with another cat then it is a cellulitis

But moot point-> if HBC then still important ot have him examined and x-rays of his back and tail taken to rule out fractures

Are you able to take him in?

Paul

He has to be seen regardless.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
Since he is able to walk, if his back is fractured, how long will it take him to recuperate?

Agreed :)

You can give Aspirin now-> 1/2 of a baby aspirin (81.0mg) to help with the pain

That is good for three days :)

And please keep me updated

Okay?

Doubt back is fractured but if tail then they heal fairly well as long as not too far down the tail

Paul

Yeah I was wondering, if his back is fractured, would he be able to still walk?

Very unlikely

He would be absolutely in massive pain

Paul

Okay, then the cellulitis absolutely makes sense. He can walk, obviously in some discomfort. In your opinion, do you think the vet clinic still insist on an x-ray?
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
he does seem to be doing a little better. Though resting all the time.

I dont think they have to take x-rays if they find fever and no obvious fractures on physical exam

Paul

Okay. I've been syringing a little water in his mouth. Is that okay?

Sure

Do you have any more questions for me now?

Paul

No. He did eat a little wet food and I carried him down to the litter tray which he used. Seems to be coming around more. And he is not growling when I gently touch his lower back.
Customer reply replied 29 days ago
He has an appt at 10:45 tomorrow morning

Great.

Okay good luck tomorrow

You can rate me now- I will leave this link open for you to update me :)

She wasn't sure what happened. If its cellultis or an abscess. She sent him home with some amoxi-clav and metacam for pain management. She thinks it could be either an abscess or a soft tissue injury. Possibly a pelvis fracture. So if he doesn't improve over then long weekend, then its xrays and sedation for a more thoroughly investigation. He is eating and walking more.

Yippee!!

He is doing really well. Appetite is great. Taking his amoxi clauv and metacam like a champ. Swelling on lower back seems to have decreased. He is moving much better as well. Tail is still limp but I thought I saw a little movement this morning.
