My 14 year old cat has been diagnosed with cryptococal fungus by a vet. His eyes are draining especially one eye which looks like he is blind. He has a large bump on his forehead and is very lathergic and won't eat. Does he need bloodwork or is there anything that can be done for him?

Marilee, I'm sorry to hear of this with Simon. Most cats can be treated with oral antifungal drugs only but that large bump indicates a large granulomatous lesion involving Simon's nose and these require surgical reduction before such a drug can have a chance of working. Even with surgical intervention treatment is typically given for months and can be quite expensive. With the best of therapy ~50% of cats are treated successfully.

Simon's lethargy and anorexia are negative prognostic signs. It's likely that he would need to be treated supportively and symptomatically while hospitalized prior to and during the initiation of the antifungal drug. Regretfully, treatment may not be the best course of action for him. I would consider having the final kindness performed for such an elderly cat suffering from such a severe systemic fungal infection. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
