Customer Question
My cat is pretty...

My cat is pretty old -- 17 years last month. She seems to have arthritis. She walks very stiffly, can no longer jump, even has a bit of trouble climbing the stairs, though she chooses to do that. What is concerning me most, is that when I go to pet her, she loves stroking on the face, but the top back of the head and the shoulders, she reacts as if it hurts, just to be touched there. I'm wondering what might be causing this and if there is anything that can help alleviate it.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Did your cat have a fall?

She was outside one night about 9 months ago, and came in disoriented and very clumsy. I think she had a stroke at that point. She has had rather minor falls since, nothing more than about 18 inches.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your cat?

She is being treated by a vet, but they don't really have any advice on this issue, other than to take her to a major university hospital for a neurological checkup.

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that your cat seems to have arthritis pain. Has your vet given you any pain medication for her?

No. Only medication to treat a kidney infection

if I touch her between the shoulder blades and it causes her to practically jump, straightening out her front legs, do you think this is arthritic pain?

It could be pain due to arthritis. Independent of what is causing it, it is pain and should be treated.

Okay, I guess I'll ask my vet to prescribe something for it. Thanks.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Rachel, Cat Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

I would ask your vet about treating with a pain medication called buprenorphine. It comes in liquid form and can be given orally. If you try a few doses and finds that it helps, you can ask your vet about having it called in to a compounding pharmacy because it would probably be cheaper for you to get it that way instead of buying multiple doses from your vet long-term. The pharmacy can even compound it into fish or chicken flavor.
