Hi, I have doubts about taking my 13 year old female cat to the vet because it is so torturous for her. My question is will her blood work have changed after 4 months? She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in November and I put her on natural meds, but she seems to be getting worse. I have the medication, but should I have her tested again before giving her what was originally prescribed to her in November?

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear about cat has hyperthyroidism and seems to be doing worse now. To answer your question, since pets age faster than we do, yes, her blood work could have changed in 4 months. If she has not been treated for hyperthyroidism, it has most likely worsened and so you are seeing worsening signs. I would get her in to the vet to have her thryoid levels rechecked, as well as other blood work done to make sure she has not developed any new problems in the mean time. Since she gets stressed going to the vet, I recommend researching whether there are any house call vets in your area that would be willing to do an exam and blood work at your home.

Hi dr I wrote to you earlier this week about her - Teddy. Thank you. She is the same cat that was losing balance. She is still loosing her footing now and just noticed she had a hard time landing on her four feet. Can this be a sign of anything else?

Hi there, hyperthyroidism can cause muscle wasting and weakness which may be why you are seeing this problem. She also probably has arthritis that can be treated with pain medication. Other causes of poor balance include other conditions that cause weakness, such as diabetes and kidney disease. Decline in vision and sight can also cause trouble with jumping.

that’s what I thought. Ok, so I will take her to the vet and blood work ASAP.

I think that's a good plan. I hope she feels better soon. If I've been helpful, I would greatly appreciate your 5-star rating. I would also be happy to continue our conversation if you have any other questions.
