Hello, my cat won’t...

Hello, my cat won’t eat or drink... blood work normal.. X-rays normal.. he will eat a tiny bit of turkey bacon and lick a tiny bit of milk off his paw. Won’t eat wet food, tuna or anything. Yesterday he revived a 2 week shot of antibiotics because the radiologist said there’s a bit of fluid in his chest. Breathing normal, however.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the cat's name?

Jackson

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Jackson?

He lost his sister a month ago and they’re about 9

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm sorry to hear that Jackson is not eating. How long has he gone without eating?

About 5 days

Has your vet given you any appetite stimulants or anti-nausea medication for him? Cats that don't eat for so long can develop a serious liver condition called hepatic lipidosis.

No just anti nausea meds

Blood work was normal just a bit of fluid in he’s chest according to the radiologist

An appetite stimulant such as mirtazapine might help. A urinalysis should also be done if it has not been done already, to check for a urinary tract infection, urinary crystals, and to find out how well his kidneys are concentrating urine. The normal blood work rules out things such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and liver disease. Cats can sometimes develop inflammation of their pancreas, which can cause lack of appetite due to abdominal pain. Pancreatitis is not checked for on normal blood work. There is a blood test you can do to detect it (Spec fPL), but the best way to diagnose it is by abdominal ultrasound. I would consider having the pancreatitis test run and also getting Jackson on some pain medication in case that is the cause of his not eating. Other sources of pain in older cats can be dental pain, and pain due to arthritis. Having an abdominal ultrasound done would also help to rule out something more sinister, such as a tumor.
