Is it normal for a cat to nibble on you the minute you stop…

Customer Question
Is it normal for...

Is it normal for a cat to nibble on you the minute you stop petting him? He will be super mellow, but as soon as I stop petting him his tail starts flicking hard and he will bite my hand. Not hard or anything, but I've never seen a cat do that before.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Strange behavior is often perplexing. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help you. What is the cat's name and age?

His name is***** and he is 4 :)

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Krustifer?

Nope. He is up to date on shots and neutered.

Thank you for your question bout Krustifer! This behavior by him isn't "normal", but I can say that I've definitely seen cats that do this! It is something that some will do as a learned behavior to try and encourage their owners (persons) to pet them more. He basically is enjoying the petting and when it stops, his first reaction is to do this to encourage more petting.

Is there any chance that he learned it from our dog do you think? He has been with her since he was a tiny kitten and she does the exact same thing lol. They are best buddies.
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
For example he will clean her, and when he stops she will do basically the same thing he does to us when we stop petting him.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Bruce, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Could she have learned it from him? I can't say it is impossible. If she's observant and sees him doing this, then she may try to repeat it.

Over a year ago I adopted a cat that i was told had a biting
Hello. Over a year ago I adopted a cat that i was told had a biting problem. The foster home was right - he does have a biting problem. And it isn't love nibbles- he bites hard and draws blood. I've been working with him for that year.I watch him closely and stop petting ,head and or neck rubs, whenever his pupils dilate , ears go back, tail switches- the usual signs. But last Saturday, shortly after feeding him, I turned my back on him for one second and he sank his fangs into my lower leg. As far as I know I did nothing to provoke his attack. I did pick up and use a theremone wall plug in, but discontinued its use after summer finally arrived and I could open the window in his room. I have another cat that he terrorizes- I tried to let him out of his room to get acquainted after a month or 2 in quarantine, but he would not let my first cat even use her litter-box without attacking- so I had to return him to his room. Of course he has always had his own litter box, food and water. And as much attention as I can give him in a day. I've been tempted to send him back to Zani's Furry Friends -Upstate NY - Syracuse specifically- but I feel very sorry for him and wouldn't like to see anything bad happen to him (euthanasia). He hasn't seen my vet yet , but he is up to date on all his shots. I don't know what will happen when he does get to see my vet. Of course I'd let her know that he bites. … read more
