Customer Question
My 18 year old...

My 18 year old cat cannot tolerate methimazole tho she is hyrperthyroid as per vet. overdose or allergy signs were: no drink no food and sleeping. her fur, pee and poop ok. she purrs but is kindof a zombie. 5 days. I get some chewies in her and some water. .She has lost half her weight. does a cat bounce back from overdose???? it has been 5 days. she was overeating over eating and hyperfrisky but tolerable. at 8 lbs.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the cat. What is the cat's name?

Dippy, a girl

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the cat?

She has a twin sister who is frisky and fine. dippy is cutest, prettiest cat ever, still is.

Welcome to JustAnswer.com! My name is***** and I have been a licensed veterinarian for 10 years. I would be happy to answer your question. I'm so sorry to hear that Dippy is sick. You mentioned that she cannot tolerate methimazole and received an overdose. How much methimazole did she receive, and when was her last lab work done?

she started after blood test last june and raised it 2.5 3 times.
her thyroid was just over limit. starving, over active and losing weight. started on 5mg.
had gaineda pound . dont know why we raised dosage. was at 10 when she stopped eating and got catatonic. vest said to stop med.
no improvement except for some water and soft chews every day. weight lower.
I live on an island and vet care is hard to come by. I have ordered a protein paste . I want to know if she will
go hyperactive again! or will not recover.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. How is Dippy doing today? When was the last time her thyroid was checked, and when did you stop giving the methimazole?

Sorry, I was just trying to get as much information as possible to be able to give a helpful answer. Yes, cats can get too much methimazole and the treatment is supportive, meaning getting them through any signs they are showing - like anti-nausea medication if they are throwing up, anti-diarrhea medication if needed, an appetite stimulant if not eating, IV fluids if they are dehydrated.
