Our rabbit has suddenly started leaning head to the left. Could it be an inner ear infection? Would penicillin be a good choice to treat with?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. There are all sorts of infections the rabbit can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the rabbit's name and age?

Peanut and it was given to us so not really sure on age. I’d say about 3 years though.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the rabbit's name?

Peanut

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Peanut?

Stays outside in a barn for the most part

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Peanut has a head tilt and you have penicillin that you want to know if it can be treated that way. Is that a correct summary of your question? Is the penicillin you have an oral solution or an injection?

That is correct. I believe we have both an oral and injection
Cat Veterinarian: Scott Perry, Cat Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

The most common causes of head tilt in rabbits are from a middle or inner ear infection, or from an infection with an organism called, Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Pencillin injection is sometimes used for middle or inner ear infections when they are severe, but topical treatments are commonly given. Unfortunately, it will not treat Encephalitozoon cuniculi. A different treatment is needed for that. You do not want to use oral penicillin for rabbits ever because it can cause life threatening diarrhea. Only injection is safe. Other possible but less common causes of head tilt in rabbits are from a central nervous system infection, abscess, or a neoplasia. It is recommended to rule out the first two and then if those are negative work through the less common causes.
