My cat has been...

My cat has been hyperthyroid for a long time. She now is on a very high dose of methimazole. She was also recently diagnosed with diabetes, which seems to be under control, and with congestive heart failure... not good

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help with the diabetes. What is the cat's name and age?

Her mood is ok for for the past several days she has had terrible diarrhea in the evening––three times in a short space of time she's on meds for it but they are doing nothing

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the cat's name?

Mozart

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Mozart?

She's on vetmedin and lasix for the heart failure but her breathing is pretty labored. Her diabetes and hyperthyroidism are controlled but with 10mg/twice a day of methimazole at the moment I'm just very concerned about the diarrhea

My cat cat has controlled diabeted and controlled hyperthyroidism (on a very high dose of methimazole). She was recently diagnosd with congestive heart failure from the hyperthyroidism and is on Vetmedin and Lasix. She's also on a potassium supplement (while this whole crisis was going on she also had pancreatitis). She is have severe explosive diarrhea. Sometimes three times in an evening. She's on me Metronidazole but it's clearly doing nothing. Help!

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner and I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.

No prospective studies have evaluated pimobendan's safety and efficacy in cats but it appears to be safe at dosages similar to those used in dogs. The primary adverse effects that have been noted in dogs are gastrointestinal effects, however - inappetence, vomiting and/or diarrhea. I would speak to Mozart's vet about discontinuing the pimodendan at least temporarily to see if her diarrhea abates. I can't rule out chronic pancreatitis as the cause of her diarrhea. Neither Lasix nor her insulin should be incriminated. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
