Hello I am Dr. Joey. Thanks for asking your question and trusting me to help you and your pet today. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 18 years of experience.

Can you let me know how much Leo weighs, please?

As well, why are you supplementing zinc in a cat?

weighs 12 pounds and because I want to boost his immune system
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Joey, Board Certified replied 3 months ago

Having just done some reading because I have never heard of supplementing this in cats, it is NOT recommended. The only use of it is in a cat sick with hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver syndrome) there is an anecdotal dose provided to be given in IV fluids. So, I cannot safely recommend any dose.

Instead as an immune support, what are we trying to boost his immune system against (does he have an upper respiratory infection or something else as each can have their own recommended supplement to help the immune system).

Here is a link for a good immune support for cats that you could look into: http://www.rxvitamins.com/

The name of the product is Immunosupport.

he has an upper respiratory virus...odd that zinc is not recommended as I have read that Pedialyte with zinc can be given to cats
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Joey, Board Certified replied 3 months ago

We can do pedialyte but zinc is not something that helps cats like it does people. So, I would avoid that. However, I do have great news. What DOES boost a cat's immunity with upper respiratory issues is l-lysine. Here is a link to my favorite formulation: CLICK HERE.

But you can also look at the vitamin link I provided above because that could be helpful in addition to l-lysine.

To see if someone well versed on holistic/herbal supplements I will opt out and see if anyone available may be able to help you.

Hi, I am Dr. Denney. I am currently reviewing your post now. Please give me a few minutes to type my response. Thank you for trusting us with your question. This service is used for general information only and is no substitute for a veterinarian-patient relationship by examination.

I am following up behind Dr. Joey.

The upper respiratory viruses in cats are difficult because some of the viral infections they can have for life and as a result, we can see periodic flare-ups.

Probiotics have been shown to help bolster the immune system so I would recommend getting Leo on a feline-specific probiotic like feline fortiflora to help in addition to the lysine

There are antiviral medications that cats can take to help reduce the viral replication and give Leo's immune system a leg up against the virus.

Famciclovir is an oral antiviral medication that has shown promise in cats and is something to be considered. Your regular veterinarian can script this out or order it for you.

Select antioxidants can also be beneficial as far as holistic care goes. Vetquinol makes a good one you can buy off amazon.com. It is not a quick fix and he would need to be one this for the long term to get any benefits. Here is a link to that.

https://www.amazon.com/Vetoquinol-411612-Select-Antioxidant-60/dp/B005TPOW7I/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520952378&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=vetquinol+antioxidan

Stress ( even low levels which do not result in any visible signs we can see as owners) can trigger a flare-up so starting him on some calming therapy to help keep his cortisol levels down is also a good idea. Feliway is a calming feline pheromone diffuser that can help to reduce stress and therefore reduce chances of respiratory viral flare-ups. Here is a link to that product
