My 9 month old...

My 9 month old kitten, Maggie is ill.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with Maggie?

Last night she vomited a large amount and it was foul smelling. She also had one bout of diarrhea; has not had another incident of either since. She's eating ok but is a bit lethargic.

Veterinarian's Assistant: This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Maggie?

She was a stray found in a ditch with her litter mates. I adopted her from the Humane Society. Has had good veterinary care since we've had her.

Hi, my name is*****'m a veterinary surgeon in the UK. Hopefully I will be able to help you.

V+d are the commonest things we see cats and dogs for, by quite a long way. There can be many different causes of these. About 80 - 90% of the causes relate to either something they have eaten (dietry indiscretion) that has really upset their GI tract or an infection from another cat. These causes are quite often not serious and require some tlc or if the animal is profusely vomiting / profuse diarrhoea examination by a vet (some infectious causes can be serious like panleukopenia which in the uk is vaccinated for routinely). The other 10% can be accounted for by other problems like toxin ingestion, parasites, foreign nody ingestion, diet change, organ problems, trauma, neoplasia (plus some more.)

The fact she is eating is good. I think always with this sort of thing it is very difficult to rule out more serious causes without examining a patient so as a precaution seeing a veterinarian may be a good idea. For a dietry indiscretion cause things like bland diets for 48-72 -hours are recommended - boiled chicken breast is good. I tend not to recommend specific medications as I have not examined her. If you do not take her to a vet then monitoring her closely and any more v/d would be an indication to see a vet.

I hope this has helped, v and d is a very common issue and most of the time not serious but there can be serious causes.

Any more specific questions please don't hesitiate to ask

Thanks

Tom
