Hi! I have an 8 month old kitten that suddenly started to act very strange. He is usually a very happy kitten that likes to play, run around, and he also purrs a lot, but today he has been totally different. Very quiet and tired. He moves very slowly and only has his eyes halfway open. We tried to give him some of his favourite candy, and he suddenly looked like he was getting better, but then he went back to his behaviour again. We are starting to get very worried for him. I started wondering if he maybe was undernourished because we feed him the same catfood as our older 10 year old cat. What should we do?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the kitten. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the kitten?

No, not really. He is a very playful and happy kitten normally! :(

Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question

When we see lethargy in a young cat/ kitten, the most common issue is a fever. These are usually due to viral infections, but could be bacterial as well.

I would get him seen by a vet and get a temperature checked. If there is a fever, then we treat with antibiotics, fluid support and anti-inflammatory meds. I usually go with a combination of Clavamox + Onsior or Metacam for the fever.

Most cats improve within 24-48 hours and get back to normal.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Ok. Are there any ways for us to check if he has a fever without contacting the vet?

You can take a rectal temperature. Just use a digital thermometer and a little lube. The normal range in cats is 100-102. If > 103, then it's a fever.
