Customer Question
I have an orange...

I have an orange tabby cat, male, around 9. He's been hiding under my bed for about a week. He has a belly but you can feel his ribs and spine like he's starving. Also might be losing patches of fur.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Strange behavior is often perplexing. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help you. What is the tabby's name?

Vinny

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Vinny?

He's also acting different. He's being needy right now, he's normally shy

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Vinny, please?

You've described the behavior and appearance of a critically ill cat. When ribs and spine beocme so prominent, significant muscle wasting has occurred and this indicates a chronic disease process.

It's like he has problems swallowing, he tries to drink water but can only drink tiny amounts and then stops, but wants more, he is very weak when he walks, but doesn't much at all
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Thank you for the additional information. He's failing and weakening. Being desert animals, cats aren't used to drinking water even when extra water is needed. He needs the attention of his vet at your earliest convenience. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I am going to take him to the vet today. Can you tell me what I should expect? I'm very worried for him
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

I'm pleased to hear that he'll be attended to shortly. His vet will want to perform a complete physical exam inclduing diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests +/- imaging in the form of X-rays or ultrasound.

Of course I will pay whatever is necessary to help him, as he is my fur baby but Could you maybe tell me a ballpark idea if how much the cost will be? Just to have an idea
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Regretfully, I can't know what you'll be charged and so always ask for a written estimate prior to anything being done.
