My neutered male cat...

My neutered male cat, approx. 9 yrs old, & is an indoor only kitty has been throwing up more often & it’s not the typical hair ball vomit, it’s stritctly liquid. He also throws up occasionally and it’s food from just eating or should I say gulping down his food. We have always believed it was from eating too fast, which is also normally his treats & not his regular food, which may be why he inhales it some of the time. So he has been throwing up the liquid maybe once a week, sometimes two. He has lost a small amt of weight, I can tell from the loose flabby skin he has from losing weight. The other thing is that it seems like he is drinking more water than usual. I don’t know how much exactly though. He has 2 different bowls & both me & my husband fill them as needed. He’s picky & doesn’t like when the water gets low so we change it out before he drinks all of it. What medical problem should I be concerned about?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the kitten?

He’s not a kitten though, he’s approx 9 yrs old. But I believe that’s everything. Oh he is up on all shots & vaccination s also

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand your cat has a recent history of vomiting, a chronic history of hair balls, weight loss, and drinking more water than normal. Is that a correct summary of the situation?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question

Thank you. I am typing my response now. Please bear with me a moment.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question

It is important to point out that a history of chronic hair balls is very relevant. Most cases that cause this involves some level of pain or inflammation inside the abdomen. For example, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal parasites, foreign body, or organ inflammation of the pancreas, liver, or bladder can all cause excessive grooming behavior that results in inflammation, nausea, and vomiting. A food allergy or intolerance can also cause these signs, so if you are observing vomiting soon after a meal then that could be the cause. As a cat gets older then the underlying condition could be getting exacerbated, but also intestinal lymphoma is on the differential list because of his age. The best way to differentiate these diagnoses is to start performing some diagnostic tests such as a blood panel, ultrasound, +/- an intestinal biopsy.

There is typically a malabsorption issue with chronic vomiting, so weekly injections of vitamin B12 are important. Treatment will vary depending on the underlying cause, but steroid therapy may be beneficial in some cases as well as anti-nausea medication (i.e. Cerenia). For the time being, the better over-the-counter remedies for nausea that are safe to use for cats would be Zantac or Pepcid. Pepcid is easier to dose. A 10 lb cat would receive 2.5 mg (i.e. 1/4 tablet) every 12 hours and that can be used over a long term.

Lastly, the increased drinking may be related to him replacing any fluid losses through the vomiting to prevent dehydration. There are also other causes of increased drinking that can be ruled out on a blood panel (i.e. diabetes, kidney issues, etc.).
