My cat seems to have leaky eyes. I have to wipe them daily, and she often has dried gunk next to her nose. I do believe it has a slight odor and has a brownish color on the tissue when I wipe it clear.

Hi this is Dr B. Thank you for your question! I am a DVM with 28 years experience. Please allow me a moment to review your question.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question

More than likely your kitty will have this problem her whole life....this is not uncommon.....some animals have this due to a very shallow area where their tears sit and the tears will overflow....you can get her tear ducts flushed to see if this will help...other patients will have this problem due to chronic viral infections and then I find that the Intranasal CVR vaccine will help with these cases....in any event keeping her eyes clean daily is very important to preventing localized skin infections around the eyes.

on a scale of 1-5, how dangerous is the condition? what are the risks, beyond a local infection? Do I need to pick at the dried gunk to clear it?

I will be right back with you...on phone call...
