Hey Dr. B.,Are cats affected by S.A.D.? My 7 y/o male is usually on my heels for breakfast, it’s a whole thing, but this morning he hid. I live in Southern California, and we just got some rain yesterday and today, do you think that could affect him? I know refusal to eat is a red flag.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. No, we don't recognize S.A.D. in our pets. One missed meal isn't cause for alarm. Two missed meals is alarming but isn't pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. Have any additional signs arisen that might clarify why he missed breakfast?

Thank you for getting back to me! I haven’t noticed any other signs recently. Though he did poop in the litter box and pee on top of it, that is kind of weird. He didn’t cover it up either. I’m a first time cat owner and I’ve had him for about 6 months.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

You're quite welcome. I don't believe there's any particular significance to that eliminative behavior. Please continue to monitor him and return to our conversation with an update at your convenience. I'm chained to my computer by evil gnomes and so I'm likely to see your next post quite soon as after you post it.

Alright so he has hid/slept most of the day, which is not unusual. But he didn’t emerge when I shook the treat bag, and he’s taken a new hiding spot under the couch. When I get down to coax him out, he meows at me in a way I’m not used to, but it doesn’t sound like he’s in pain. But I don’t know.

We're still in the dark. Please return in the morning with an update.
