I am sorry to hear Lacey has a brain tumor. How was this diagnosed?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
CT scan. And actually CT scan was for lump in throat and they CT scan in brain
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

I am so sorry. What is the recommended treatment? What is your question about her condition?

Just waiting for Vet to discuss with others in practice since he's not seen a case like this. MRI? I already know all this but what is your suggestions to handle this case?
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

It would be best to consult with a neurologist. The main therapy for brain tumors today is "gamma knife" radiation to shrink or eliminate the tumor. Only a few places do this procedure.

Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

Sugery is invasive, and chemotherapy not usually done for brain tumors.

This Vet went in circles and mentioned lump in throat needs to be removed and something about radiation for both?!
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

You can't biopsy a brain tumor, but has a biopsy been done on the throat tumor? Is it a thyroid tumor?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

It should be fairly simple to use a needle to tap the tumor in the throat to determine what it is, and what treatment is best.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Couldnt biopsy throat lump since it was so close to larynx didn't want to without MRI but then found brain tumor from ct scan
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

So they do not have a diagnosis of what the throat tumor is, or what organ it is from (thyroid, lymph node, etc.)?

If not, I would consult with an oncologist and/or neurologist about therapy options. I am sorry; this sounds like it could be serious; the two tumors could be related.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

I would ask about using ultrasound to guide a needle biopsy of the throat tumor, if this can be done.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
He is an Oncologist!
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

So what is he recommending as the next step?

If this were my own cat, I would be trying to get at least a needle biopsy of the lump in the throat, to know what we may be dealing with, before doing radiation.

Customer reply replied 7 months ago
my regular vet did an ultrasound on throat lump. said he could remove!
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

If the thorat lump can be removed and a biopsy done, that might be where I would start.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
Since it sounds like brain tumor is secondary and Lacey shows no signs of a brain tumor. Everything is as normal as can be with this sweet sweet kitty!
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

I am glad she does not have any neurologic signs. If your vet thinks the throat lump can be removed and biopsied, that is where I would start.

Please let me know how she is doing, if this is helpful, and if I can answer anything else.

Main question is when they open up throat to remove, worst case scenario?
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

That is hard to say since I can't see or feel the lump. The throat has a lot of blood vessels and nerves; there are possible complications. I would have this done by a surgeon with a lot of experience with this kind of surgery. Worst case scenario with any surgery is death, but that would not be something I would not expect.

There could be neurologic complications which could be transient or permanent.

With removing throat lump? which i see as primary cancer and brain tumor secondary
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

There is no way to know for sure without a biopsy if the throat is the primary. Probably it is, but these could be separate primary tumors.

I don't know where and how big the throat lump is. If it can be felt from the outside, I might attempt a needle biopsy before anything else.
