Customer Question
Happy new year!...

Happy new year! Is enema, specifically Feline Pet-Ema by PRN pharmacal, safe to be administered at home by ourselves on our 17-year old cat without supervision of a vet? Or do we must take him to the clinic again? He has been taken to the hospital many times in the past few months already due to chronic constipation. Thanks! *****: I'll do all I can to help. What is the feline's name?

Meatball : )

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the feline?

Vets have confirmed that he has a mass growth by his small intestines. He's currently been given 1/4 TSP of Miralax twice per day and wet food mixed with pumpkin puree in hope for relief. He used to be diabetic but currently in remission now.

Yes, Richard, as long as the enema doesn't contain phosphate salts (some enemas show "saline" on the label but actually contain phosphate salts rather than sodium chloride which is true saline in the medical sense) it's safe to administer to Meatball. The Feline Pet-Enema by PRN contains docusate sodium which is a stool softener. It also contains glycerine which acts as a lubricant laxative. You can also administer oral docusate sodium (e.g., Colace) found over the counter in your local drug store at a dose of 50 mg daily to Meatball. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
