Customer Question
My outside 8 month...

My outside 8 month old cat look like it’s having seizures about every hour. jerking and breathing fast. Local vets are closed...

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the cat's name?

Cloley

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Cloley?

Yes, looks like blood is coming from his nose. Someone told me to gave him goat milk and raw eggs. I have to feed it to him from a syringe.

Hello,

I am Dr. Snow, and I can try and help you. Does it look like he had some trauma? The jerking could be seizures or it could be a reaction to a toxin. The blood from the nose could be due to trauma or some sort of infection.

No trauma that I can see...he’s started panting after each seizure,

Has anyone applied any topical flea medication in the last day or so? Sometimes that can cause seizures

Can you check and see if his gums are nice and pink? The panting is very concerning. Is there an emergency clinic in your area?

Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,

Ok, that is good. Its really hard for me to say from over the computer, but it is very concerning that he is open mouthed breathing and having possible seizure activity.

There are a lot of things that could be going on here - with an outdoor kitty we have to consider a toxin (like a poison), an infection, unknown head trauma, etc.

He really needs bloodwork and probably some medication to stop the tremors. There is not going to be a whole lot you can do from home, except to keep him warm and comfortable.

I would not syringe feed anything but water at this point. Please don't get bit!

He’s panting through his nose.
Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,

Like breathing heavy with his mouth closed? Is this constant or intermittent?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 6 months ago
don’t give his goat milk?
Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,
 replied 6 months ago

I would not, because if he is having trouble breathing he could aspirate it.

About how much is a vet visit for something like this?
Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,
 replied 6 months ago

Well, it would really depend on your area. Here, an emergency vet visit is around $100 for the consult, bloodwork and medications would be another $100-$200. I would say for an examination, bloodwork, and medications you're looking at a few hundred dollars!

Again, it really depends on your area though. What is he doing now?

Is this something he’ll past or continue?
Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,
 replied 6 months ago

Its really hard to say because we don't know the cause yet. Is he still having the tremors?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Sarah Snow,
 replied 6 months ago

Did you see my last comment? I cannot say if this will continue or not since we don't know the cause without doing some tests.

The main possibilities are infection (bacterial, viral, parasitic), toxin(exposure to something harmful like a human drug, rat poison, etc), or some sort of head trauma.

Without doing some tests, it is hard to say which one of those is more likely.

Your options are: 1. take him to an emergency clinic OR 2. monitor at home, keep him warm and comfortable, syringe feed him water carefully and watch his breathing

Is he still having the tremors?
