10 month old male cat.. had been sick for a couple weeks, been giving him antibiotics. Last night he was kinda lethargic and not moving much. This morning he was up and a little while later I notice he has blood coming from his nose and mouth

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the cat. What is the cat's name?

I'm sorry to hear of this. That kind of bleeding suggests a clotting disorder such as an anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity or idiopathic immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (a lack of blood platelets. Junior needs the attention of his vet at your earliest convenience. A complete physical exam including a complete blood count (CBC), platelet count, and clotting times needs to be performed. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

What would cause it to occur all of a sudden? Is it due to him being sick? He's always been an indoor cat.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

We can rule out an anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity if he never leaves the house and he doesn't have access to such a poison inside the house. A thrombocytopenia, then, makes the most sense and in most cases it's idiopathic (unknown cause) but thought to be immune-mediated (altered immune system). His sickness is unclear to me and I don't know why he was prescribed antibiotics but uncontrolled bleeding can be seen in many disorders. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an example of such a disorder and is life-threatening; hence, the need to have him attended to at your earliest convenience. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

He had an upper respiratory infection and was prescribed amoxicillin to help clear it up. He was doing okay then last night he wasn't moving very much, his gums are pale. This morning he was up on his feet and seemed okay. Now he has a small amount of blood coming from his nose and mouth. Could it be due to the infection?
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

Thank you for the additional information. Pale gums indicate that he's also bleeding internally. I don't see a mechanism for an upper respiratory infection to cause uncontrolled bleeding. Amoxicillin is usually well-tolerated with adverse effects limited to the gastrointestinal tract.

Okay so whatever is causing his bleeding is it contagious? We have multiple cats.. several of them have gotten sick as well but all seem to be doing better after taking antibiotics. He just isn't getting well
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

It sounds as something contagious is affecting so many cats. The feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses are important considerations when a bleeding disorder arises but I suspect that your cats have been tested for those viruses at an early age and found not to have them.

I know the upper respiratory infection is contagious. But he is the only one that has had blood coming from his nose and mouth. I called my vet and he seems to act like it's not a big deal and to just continue with antibiotics.. he isn't wanting to eat or drink.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

Uncontrolled bleeding and pale gums isn't a big deal? You and I know better. I wouldn't hesitate to have Junior attended to promptly.

Can you give me any tips on getting him to eat or drink? I don't know what to do. I don't want him suffering.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

You can't make an ill cat eat. You can only force-feed with a gruel made from his regular food. A large eyedropper or small poultry baster placed between his cheek teeth and cheek will facilitate feeding.

Could I possibly give him Pedialyte to help with dehydration?
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 1 month ago

Certainly. In fact, Pedialyte can be used to make the gruel.
