She's been lethargic for a few days, loss of appetite, now she looks sick

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the cat. What is the cat's name and age?

Sorry. She's 7 or 8. I've been feeding her boiled eggs and tuna. Maybe that's the problem

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the cat's name?

Ziggy

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Ziggy?

She was vomiting up her can cat food and could only eat a very small amount of dry cat food or she would vomit. That's why I began the tuna and egg diet.

I am sorry to hear you are worried about Ziggy. She does sound like she is ill, or has a fever.

Does she keep the tuna and eggs down when she eats, without vomiting? Is she drinking at all?

If you lift her lip and look at her gums, are they pink in color?

Can you take her temperature with a rectal thermometer? Normal is 101.5

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

When a cat is not eating, she is saying she does not feel well. If she goes too long without eating and drinking, and if she is also vomiting she is at rick for being dehydrated. If her gums seem pale rather than pink, she may need some supplemental fluid therapy.

Hi, more white than pink. Very pale pink
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

That is very concerning to me, if her gums are white or very pale.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Pale gums can be a sign of dehydration, shock, pain, internal bleeding, serious illness.

Customer reply replied 8 months ago
She drank a little water just now but not eating. she ate a little this morning
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Good she is drinking. Try offering chicken broth or tuna juice to maintain her hydration.

If her gums continue to look pale, she may need medical attention.

Should I be concerned about mercury poisoning?
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

That seems unlikely; how would she be exposed to mercury? There can be mercury in tuna, but she would have to eat a lot of tuna for a while.

I am more concerned she has a fever, an infection, an internal illness such as a blockage, or liver or kidney disease.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I've been feeding her only human can tuna with boiled egg for about 3 months.
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

That is not a balanced diet, but this is still not likely to be mercury poisoning. Mercury poisoning affects the nervous system, causing things like walking like she is drunk, blindness, tremors, seizures.

Would it hurt to try an antibiotic
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

She could have some other vitamin deficiency from not being on cat food, but this is probably not mercury poisoning.

Antibiotics would help if this is a bacterial infection. It would be best for her to be examined and to try to get a diagnosis.

I can't see a vet for now, would an antibiotic help? Her face is puffy, she looks a little hunched up. She still likes to be held and such
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Any chance of her getting any Tylenol at all? That can cause a puffy face and pale gums.

If this is a bacterial infection, antibiotics might help but might do anything. What antibiotics do you have?

She didn't get into Tylenol. I don't have any meds for her. Can you prescribe one?
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

I cannot. I am here for advice and information only, as it says in the disclaimer. You can only get prescription medication from a veterinarian who has seen and examined her.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Good this is not Tylenol; that would be gravely serious.

What advice are you giving me
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

My advice has been that I am very concerned she could be seriously ill, and in need of medical attention. I doubt this is mercury poisoning; the symptoms do not match. Pale gums are always a concern to me.

If you can take her temperature that would be helpful; normal rectal temperature is 101.5.
