I have a recently diagnosed diabetic cat and we’ve been doing okay for the last month with her new routine. The last day or so she’s been stubborn with breakfast feedings but eventually ate enough in time for her morning insulin injection. Today she is absolutely being stubborn, not eating more than a few bites and it’s already time for her shot. She’s vomited this morning clear fluids that I can tell (onto a brown pillow in her feeding area). Our vet had told us to give Karo syrup but the information overload at the time to give and amount is vague now. I’m trying to find out if we should hold off on her insulin injection or give her the syrup and how much? She’s still very much alert and crying out like her normal self. Our vet isn’t open until tomorrow morning.

Jerillyn, in a well-regulated diabetic, I maintain the same dose of insulin if one meal is missed, halve the dose if two consecutive meals are missed, and stop adminstration of insulin if three consecutive meals are missed. I suspect that Paige is nauseated if she's vomiting which would explain why she's inappetent. Pancreatitis should always be considered as the cause of vomiting in a diabetic cat. A sucrose containing-syrup such as Karo is usually reserved for overdose situations which shouldn't arise if you follow the guideline above. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Okay. So if we can get her to eat some as she is picking a little now, her normal shot time is 8am, it’ll be okay to give her dose at 9 and next routine one at 8 tonight?

Yes, but I'd want to see how much she eats prior to the 8PM scheduled dose before deciding if she should have a full or half dose. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
