Our 17-year-old Devon Rex cat is "piddling" on the floor,

Customer Question
Hi... our 17-year-old Devon...

Hi... our 17-year-old Devon Rex cat is "piddling" on the floor, sometimes right in front of the litter box. She tested positive for a UTI, and the doctor gave her an injected antibiotic. We recently went in and asked for a booster, which we received, because the problem... which seemed to be in remission... reappeared. He mentioned that she might have a tumor which is pressing against her urinary tract somehow. This is coupled with an increase in the delicate, wobbly way she has taken to walking recently. This started a few months ago, but seems to have gotten worse in the last month.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the cat?

She has 4 small lumps. Her bloodwork does not indicate that they are cancerous (even though this is not conclusive). She had a benign tumor removed 2 years ago. The doctor thinks she is now too old to risk the anesthesia for another surgery.

The first would be to get her a bladder ultrasound to make sure she doesn't have a bladder tumor or bladder stones causing this. This will make a big difference in treatment and prognosis for her. If we can rule out those things, I would recommend starting her on a urinary food to help decrease the inflammation in her bladder. You can also start her on cranberry extract (1 pill per day) to help decrease her predisposition for urinary issues. You can feed her canned food to increase her water intake as well. Another thing some people have good luck with is to try a different cat litter, Dr. Elsey's Urinary Litter I have seen really good results with this litter in cats with recurrent urinary problems.
