My cat has been sneezing for a long time now. I’ve taken him to the vet and they basically said it’s a virus and he will get over it. Well today he’s puked twice,

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your cat eat anything unusual?

Nothing out of the ordinary. First it was food and then it was frothy. He won’t eat anything at all today. And has been sleeping non stop.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the cat's name?

Milo

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Milo?

He came from a shelter a month ago. He has been to vet twice for bloody mucus.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Milo, please?

The feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) is the most common of the infectious respiratory agents that causes the sneezing you're seeing. Thankfully, it usually goes into remission unaided within 1-3 weeks but that doesn't appear to be the case here. The bacteria Mycoplasma and Chlamydophila can be found in conjunction with FHV-1 or as sole infecting agents but they, too, should go into remission unaided in that time frame. In the case in which my patient doesn't improve within the initial 10 days from the onset of symptoms, I'll prescribe the antibiotic of choice - doxycycline - to address those bacteria. Antibiotics don't address viruses such as FHV-1 but I can prescribe the antiviral drug famciclovir if I believe that a serious case of FHV-1 is brewing.
Vomiting isn't expected with respiratory infections and so another cause should be considered - a simple dietary indiscretion, change of food, hairball, gastrointestinal infection (bacterial, viral), toxin, and many metabolic disorders which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
