Customer Question
My cat is having...

My cat is having difficulty urinating regularly. He is going to his litter box at least a dozen times a day as opposed to his normal 3 to 4. He has been given Clavamox tablets which he has taken and has been given an x-ray which shows no stone or blockage but he still goes too frequently. He just sheds a few drops as opposed to his normal larger deposit. Is there some other substance I can give him--medical or home remedy?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the cat's name?

Kato

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Kato?

He is about 7 to 8 years old, is neutered, has had all his required shots and he is doing all his normal activities--sleeping, eating, playing, etc. other than the urine problem

I'm sorry to hear of this with Kato. He remains stranguric - frequent attempts to urinate little or no urine, and this results from a urethral blockage, urethral swelling, or both. He's a patient I would catheterize under light sedation to see if a mucoid/grit plug has partially obstructed his urethra. An angry bladder due to idiopathic (sterile) cystitis (also called FUS or FLUTS) will form copious amounts of both mucus and grit which balls up and can plug the urethra when urine passes. Antibiotics are rarely necessary as infection is found in less than 2% of these male cats. Antibiotics can be important, however, to prevent infection post-catheterization.

To answer you directly, should there be no blockage at this time both subcutaneous fluids (to dilute the urine of noxious substances) and a urethral muscle relaxer such as prazosin should be considered appropriate therapy for Kato. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
