Hi, my cat hasn’t eaten or drank for almost 12 hours now, seems to just be sitting around and looks to be walking almost in a timid way

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if your cat will be able to digest that. What is the cat's name and age?

Molly and she’s 7

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Molly?

She’s often outside and hasn’t been outside for more than about 20 mins over 48 hours No this is the first time Iv ever seen her like this

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

Any retching, gagging, lip licking, drooling, or vomiting?

Any change to her breathing?

Are her gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on her belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Could she have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

When I touch her belly she does growl so I’d say her belly is causing her some discomfort.iv cooked her chicken today and given her ham, she’s licking her lips but not eating anything, there’s quite a smell coming from her mouth today. She could have eaten something as we live near a garage. Breathing seems fine .

Hello again,

First, I am glad to hear that Molly hasn't any respiratory distress nor gum paling; but if that belly is sore enough that she is warning you off then we do need to tread with care. In fact, we'd be worried about a severe gastritis, pancreatitis, or ingestion of harmful items (ie toxins, plants, non-edible items). All could cause pain as well as nausea (suspect with the appetite loss and lip licking).

With this all in mind, if she is very sore, we are best having her seen at this point to be safe. Any delay and we can at least try some home supportive care to try to settle her stomach. To start, you can consider treating her with a OTC pet safe antacid. [ie Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), Tagamet (More Info/Dose Here @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/cimetidine-hcl-tagamet)]. Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if she has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned.

Afterwards, you can consider tempting her to eat. Favorites are allowed but we can also try an easily digestible diet like boiled chicken, boiled white fish, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). There are also OTC vet diets that can be used (ie Hill’s I/D or Royal Canin’s sensitivity) too. The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset. If she cannot be tempted, we can offer or syringe feed watered down canned kitten food, Hill's A/D, Royal Canin Recovery, or Clinicare Canine/Feline Liquid Diet. All of these are critical care diets that are calorically dense, so a little goes a long way nutrition-wise

Overall, her signs do raise a few concerns here. Therefore, if she is that sore, I'd be keen to have her seen now so we can get to the root of this quickly and get her onto kitty safe pain relief. Else we can try the above if there is any delay but of course if she doesn't respond we'd again need a check for the above, get her vet addressing the pain +/- treating injectable anti-vomiting medication to get her back feeling like herself.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
