Customer Question
My outdoor/indoor cat seems...

My outdoor/indoor cat seems to have lost his voice. He doesn't seem injured anywhere but he has a loud meow and is known to talk and now it's barley a sound?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the cat?

He lost his voice barley any sound coming out but eating fine

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the cat seem to hurt?

He doesn't and no sign of injury

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. No obvious pain. Can you see anything that looks wrong or different?

Nope

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Nothing visually obvious. Is the cat eating normally?

Yes

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. No appetite problems. Is the cat having trouble peeing or pooing?

No Only problem is his voice

Veterinarian's Assistant: How is the cat behaving differently?

He is staying in more and even lying in bed which he's never done. He is 8 and we've had him since he opened s eyes

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the cat's name?

Ronald

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Ronald?

He usually spends more time out then in, but doesn't travel far anymore. He did bring home a "present" last week a decapitated field mouse

I am sorry to hear you are concerned about this voice change in Ronald. This can mean he has a sore throat, or an infection, or an injury to his vocal cords.

If he is staying in more than usual, and lying in bed more, he could have a fever. Can you take his temperature with a rectal thermometer? Normal is 101.5.

Check his gums by lifting his lip; do they look a normal pink or do they seem pale?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
No fever, gums pink. Voice was a bit stronger this morning. The staying in more started after Hurricane Irma, we live in Florida.
Cat Veterinarian: Rebecca, Cat Veterinarian replied 7 months ago

The staying in may be related to the fear and stress of going through a hurricane.

If his voice continues to improve, he may just have a virus or other infection. If it gets worse, I would have his vocal cords and throat checked, which will require sedation.

Please let me know if this is helpful and what other questions you may have.
