Customer Question
She will only eat...

She will only eat the gravy from the wet food. She is a 14 year old Persian that has been eating 3 cans of wet food a day but now will only eat the gravy. She will not eat dry food or drink water either

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the Persian's name?

Sheba

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Sheba?

She was checked in May - an x-ray, other tests....they said she had a mass in her abdomen ( vet in Florida ) but checked with vet in Maine and she was examined- he found no mass...digestive issue he said that worked it's way out and she was fine all summer in Maine ,,back in Florida and now she is not eating -just gravy (started today as she had been eating 3 cans of wet food every day

Hi there!

Unfortunately, decrease in or selective appetite is a very non-specific symptom in cats which can mean a lot of different conditions... Additionally, cats are very good at hiding sings of pain and discomfort which leads to prolonging the time to diagnosis as we often can't tell that they are sick. But, given her age and breed, some of the conditions are more likely:

1. Oral pain from dental disease; dental problems often go undiagnosed because it's difficult to see into the mouth, because cats may go on eating even with painful teeth and because many painful oral problems are under the surface and can only be diagnosed by detailed examination under anesthesia and dental x-rays.

2. Nausea from intestinal disease, such as with intestinal cancer (e.g. lymphoma)

3. Kidney disease; even without vomiting (which is common in cats with kidney disease), cats can stop eating or eat very little because of the nausea associated with the condition.

4. Pain elsewhere, e.g. arthritis; decreased appetite may be the only sign of pain somewhere in the body.

You can offer different types of canned food, may be pate style, without gravy, but ultimately finding out why she isn't eating well will be the key to finding successful/safe treatment. There isn't much more you can do at home, unfortunately. Even though she was just examined in May, I would make an appointment with your vet within next few days (don't wait longer!) so that she could be evaluated again. Several months in a cat's life amount to several years of human life and lots of things can happen during that time...

I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have further questions or need clarification on the above information.

I will call the vet for a check up...although I do not trust this office - overcharges and misdiagnoses...that is why I asked you . Also I do not want the Free Trial. Will I be charged ongoing for this?

Got it! For the first part: I certainly would not continue with a medical team you don't have trust in. Ask your friends for recommendations and see if you are more comfortable with another hospital. Having trust in the doctor you work with is one of the most important aspects of getting good care..

For second part, you'll have to contact customer care, as I have no access to your account/financial information.

Hopefully this isn't anything serious... Best of luck with Sheba!
