It typically doesn't take much to trigger vomiting in a cat but when older cats start to vomit, I always worry that there may be problems with the kidneys, thyroid, pancreas or liver; however, when there's a history of chronic vomiting, then I'd want to consider Inflammatory Bowel Disease before anything else.

There is usually a history of intermittent vomiting in these patients which worsens into a flare-up but the pattern of vomiting can be quite variable. There cats are rarely losing weight (although some can) or showing other signs...they just retch and vomit secondary to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

Blood work would be normal, in most cases; even an ultrasound wouldn't necessarily pick it up. It would take biopsies to diagnose which is, obviously, something most owners understandably don't want to put their cats through.

Response to steroids can often be very useful in diagnosing IBD (as long as the patient isn't a diabetic) but there is usually a dietary component to this problem as well. Feeding grain free may help in some cases but often you have to feed more hypoallergenic diets such as Z/D (from your vet), or Natural Ba***** *****mited Ingredient Diets, Nature's Variety Instincts line, Evo duck or venison, Nature's Variety Frozen Raw Medallions (I recommend that they be zapped in the microwave for 10-15 seconds on each side).

Sometimes this is a trial and error process---finding the food that your cat will eat as well as one that helps with the problem.

In addition to a change in diet, probiotics such as Forti Flora appears to be of benefit for many of these patients. This product is available at many local pet or grain stores or can be purchased online without a prescription.

There are other options to consider which I'll list but if this were my patient, I'd likely start with a change in diet first and a probiotic before adding them:

1. l-glutamine 500mg/day crush in food which is available at health food stores or online.
2. NuCat Senior which is a supplement which contains anti-oxidants.
3. Vitamin D3 1,000 IU day.. but not calcitriol. This amount of Vit D3 is not dangerous to cats
4. Cerenia which is a drug that would have to be dispensed by your vet.

I hope this helps, Deb
