My cat became sick...

My cat became sick apx 5days ago, took him to my vet, he thought he was exposed to a toxin, he gave him an I'm injection of atropine and cortisone, Today my cat is eating very little and not drinking, should I be concerned, talked to my vet today he said cont watching if he gets worse bring him in. Should I be conserved, or is my vet giving me correct instructions?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your cat?

He is a 5 year old bengel, has been very healthy until now

I would be skeptical here that Atropine and Cortisone are going to resolve this issue. Atropine is used to increase the heart rate and dry up any secretions like excessive drooling. Cortisone is a steroid for allergic and auto-immune diseases.

The underlying cause here is going to be very important. I would start with some bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, electrolyte derrangements, infectious causes, leukemia, ect. That would be a starting place.

If there is any vomiting, then x-rays to rule out an obstruction or hairball would be ideal. Those are potentially surgical diseases.

The treatment ultimately depends on what is found. At a minimum I would probably do some fluids, an appetite stimulant (Mirtazapine) and potentially antibiotics if I'm thinking infection.

I would go back and get a better work up done before it gets into the middle of the weekend and all that is open is an ER vet where the charges are going to be double what a typical general practice vet charges.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
