Hello. My queen has a litter of 6 week old kittens. A few days ago I let her out into her outdoor enclosure with my other cat (the other had the flu about three weeks ago). Two days later the mother cat developed signs of cat flu, I've separated her from the kittens, but I'm wondering if I should have left her with them, I'm worried they will catch the virus, but also concerned as she's calling out to them and has become quite heavy with milk, worried about mastitis. Should I return her to her kittens? They are not vaccinated yet.
Mother had severe drooling and sneezing for two days, is still sneezing.

Hi.

Dr. Paul Brazzell here.

Have you finished weaning them? Or at least started the process?

I began weaning last week. They've had two days without their mother, I'm feeding them quality diluted kitten wet food three times daily.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
They are eating all the food I give them.

Great job.

Well you could consider the intra-nasal Distemper Measles vaccine for the kittens to give them an immunity boost.

But it would be a foot race with the infection that the mum has.

I dont have a problem separating them to be honest but you will really have to be regimented in your handling of them and her so as to not spread the infection.

Thank you, ***** ***** with laboratory animals in aseptic conditions - it requires following a cleanliness hierarchy so I have good experience with handling the aseptic conditions, ethanol and other disinfectants as well as obviously handling kittens before handling the mother. I have them seperate in different tiled rooms away from each other to manage the spread of the virus. I will have them vaccinated this week, but was unsure of the ethical viewpoint on seperate groups the queen and the kittens so fast. The kittens are doing perfectly, the mother is doing ok, getting better but very stressed about her kittens. Is there something I can do to avoid mastitis?
Cat Veterinarian: DocPaul, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Great!

I would cut her food back so that her milk glands dry up quickly

You can restrict 50% day one and then 25% for the following few days.
