Customer Question
Two of my cats...

Two of my cats seem to have lost their meow. They've both lost a little weight but otherwise appear mostly normal. They both open their mouths and nothing comes out or sounds strangled. Could it be upper respiratory infection?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. There are all sorts of infections your cat can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the cat's name and age?

Norman is a Tonkinese male and is 12. Pyewacket is a 11 year old male DSH.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Norman?

He saw the vet for a similar thing a few weeks ago. His pupils were dialated and he had chest congestion. He was on antibiotics and some lasix. She said it might be early rental failure or early heart problems. The antibiotics seemed to resolve it and he is no longer on any rx.

Given two cats effected at a similar time with this concern, yes I'd be concerned about an upper respiratory infection as a possibility. Given Norman's history of chest congestion / heart problems that resolved with antibiotics, I'd suggest following up with the vet that saw Norman, and bring in Pyewaket for a back-to-back appointment with both of them, so they can be evaluated together as a "group" to determine the next best course of action. It may be simply to treat them both for infections at the same time, or diagnostics might be suggested. But yes, to answer your question, this definitely could be a respiratory infection that they've shared with each other.
