She has little white worms ... and with the little white worms come little white specks

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. There are all sorts of infestations the cat can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the cat's name and age?

Little white flat worms that dry up to look like pieces of rice are segments of tapeworms. Little white specks in the fur are flea ova and little black specks in the fur are flea feces. If you see tiny thin black worms in the fur, they're flea larvae. A cat needs to ingest a flea containing a larval tapeworm in order to develop an adult flea inside the GI tract.

You can worm Simba with an over the counter tapewormer containing praziquantel*. Just one worming should suffice but you'll need to make sure her flea control is current or she can develop an adult tapeworm again in as little at 30 days. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I'm not too sure the worms are flat. They look almost like pin worms
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Thank you. Cats don't suffer from pinworms. If the worms are cylindrical and perhaps coiled they're roundworms. You can purchase an over the counter wormer containing pyrantel and worm today and again in two weeks which should rid Simba of roundworms. If you're still not sure which you're seeing, Simba's vet can perform a fecal ova and parasite exam and tell you which (or both) are present. There's no harm in presumptively worming Simba for both types of worms. It's good prophylactic care in our pets. Please continue our conversation if you wish.

I regret that my state board of veterinary examiners doesn't allow me to speak to customers by phone in this venue but other experts in this category may be able to assist you in this regard. Please let me know if you'd like another expert to do so and I'll opt out of this conversation. Please stay in the conversation if you wish.
