I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. A stertor (snoring-like sound) and nasal discharge in a cat is most consistent with an upper respiratory infection usually caused by the feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) which usually goes into remission within 1-3 weeks unaided.

The bacteria Chlamydophila and Mycoplasma can be sole infecting agents or be found along with FHV-1. I might prescribe the antibiotic of choice when addressing those bacteria – doxycycline – if I didn’t see an appreciable improvement within the first week after the onset of signs.

Should a conjunctivitis arise, it’s not unreasonable to treat it with over the counter Terramycin ophthalmic ointment which can be found in some pet/feed stores or online. A dab of ointment into each eye thrice daily for at least ten consecutive days should be helpful.

FHV-1 doesn’t respond to doxycyline or the antibiotics in Terramycin ophthalmic ointment. If my patient doesn’t respond to either doxycycline and/or Terramycin ophthalmic ointment, I might prescribe the antiviral drug famciclovir which is given orally as well as an antiviral ophthalmic solution containing cidofovir.

Cats who lose their appetite from these infections will benefit from supplemental fluids given by their vet as well as a syringeable and palatable convalescent food such as Hill’s a/d.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
