I understand you are concerned about blackish, crusty debris that builds up in your kitten's nose.
Is this a new problem for him or something he has always had?

What you are seeing is likely dried mucous with increased amounts of porphyrin pigment and protein. Cats have increased amounts of porphyrins, which are reddish/black/brown pigments, normally in their tears and saliva compared to other species. When they have inflammation, from viral or bacterial infections, we tend to see more pigment being produced and increased amounts of mucous being produced.
We tend to see this build-up happen more in cats with gum disease, eye inflammation or upper respiratory infections, like Calici virus or Herpes virus.

If he has other symptoms like sneezing or increased tearing then this may be related to a respiratory infection. You can give him an amino acid supplement called L-lysine at a dose of 500mg orally twice daily. If this infection is due to Herpes this amino acid interferes with virus replication and will shorten the infection's duration and severity. Good supplements to try are made by the Viralys brand which comes in a powder to add to the food or a tasty gel.

If his eyes seem to be tearing more, his eyelids appear swollen or red, or he is squinting, then this may be related to a respiratory infection affecting his eyes. You can start with flushing his eyes copiously with sterile saline, that should soothe his eyes and hopefully remove any sort irritation.

Then apply artificial tears every few hours for the next few days to keep his eyes cushioned and hydrated.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
