My cat as been vomitting for three days

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your cat eat anything unusual?

Not that I know of usually she eats dry food and water. Sometimes Frisky- wet food.

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is the cat's name?

Jolie

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Jolie?

Yesterday there was a ting of blood in the vomit. but I haven't seen it again.

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Jolie has been vomiting for the last 3 days. I am very sorry to hear about this problem. There are a couple more follow up questions I need to ask in order to give you the correct advice.

1) About how old is Jolie?

2) Is there a chronic history of vomiting / hair balls?

3) Any possibility Jolie swallowed a foreign body from a toy, like a string?

She is 9 years old.
No chronic history of vomiting hair balls- maybe once a month max.
A foreign body wouldn't be Impossible but in the 9 years shes been with me that has never happened.

Thank you for that information. I am concerned about her vomiting so consistently for the last 3 days. The possibility of dehydration and electrolyte loss is higher in cases of chronic vomiting, so we will want to treat that as well as treating the underlying cause of the nausea.

There are many causes of vomiting in cats, but a few stand out more in older cats. An underlying intestinal inflammatory disorder such as inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerance, or a food allergy is possible. The liver and pancreas can also get inflamed in cats and this is called cholangiohepatitis and pancreatitis in cats. These are very nauseating conditions that can cause chronic vomiting. Finally, neoplasia is also a possibility in older cats. Less common causes would be from a foreign body, sudden food change, or parasites.

There are some over-the-counter options of treatment to help decrease nausea and hopefully stop the vomiting. Pepcid can be given for this at 2.5 mg every 12 hours. However, severely nauseating conditions generally require a stronger medication for nausea (i.e. Cerenia), which is only available through your veterinarian. She can also receive fluids there to treat dehydration and get some initial testing to rule out some of the conditions I mentioned above.
