Indoor cat. 1 year old. Tested Negative for FIV and FeLUK.

Customer Question
Indoor cat. 1 year...

Indoor cat. 1 year old. Tested Negative for FIV and FeLUK. Treating as intestional infection with steroid shot, antibitoc and deworming. She did great for a couple days until steroid wasn't in her system. She is only licking juice from food and drinking water. Shes tired most of time and has a very high heart rate.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the cat. What is the cat's name?

Pepper

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Pepper?

I got her from a shelter as a kitten.

Hello. My name is***** and I am a veterinarian that can answer your question. I understand Pepper is not eating her food well, but a steroid, antibiotic, and deworming worked for a short time but did not ultimately resolve the issue. Is that a correct summary?

Can you prescribe Meds?
Cat Veterinarian: Scott Perry, Cat Veterinarian replied 10 months ago
Cats that have a sudden loss of appetite will bring suspicion of certain digestive disorders. Inflammatory bowel disease is high on the list of rule outs, as well as liver or pancreas inflammation. Food allergies or intolerance to certain ingredients should also be considered. Finally, a foreign body is also possible and somewhat common in younger cats. X-rays and blood work are the next diagnostic steps. This should help to rule out a foreign body, liver, and pancreas inflammation. A biopsy would be necessary to rule out inflammatory bowel disease. There may need to be an adjustment on the doses of the steroid and antibiotic. Treatment for inflammatory bowel disease requires a higher dose of steroid than most other conditions. There may also need to be an anti-nausea medication, which is also likely present. Your veterinarian will have access to stronger medication options, but you could also use over-the-counter Pepcid. I am sorry for this problem she is experiencing. Unfortunately, state laws do not allow me to write prescriptions for medications without performing an actual physical exam on Pepper. However, I can help you determine e next step so that you know what to do, and I can answer any question you have about diagnostic results or treatments.
