Customer Question
I think my cat...

I think my cat has a hairball, hasn't had a bowel movement in a few days, at the vet her xray was normal, blood test normal

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with your cat?

I think she has a hairball, it causing her not to have a bowel movement

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does your cat seem to hurt?

She seems alright

Veterinarian's Assistant: Can you see anything that looks wrong or different?

No, kind of not as active as usual... she threw up on Sunday but has been eating each day but Monday only a bit

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Nothing visually obvious. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your cat eat anything unusual?

The usual stuff, looks like she threw up some hair on Sun, wasn't a hairballlthough

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the cat's name and age?

Fidget, 9 yrs old

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Fidget?

She urinates but no bowel movement for 4 days, is eating normally now

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. A hairball - particularly a trichobezoar (a particularly nasty type of hairball) - could potentially obstruct Fidget's GI tract but there are many other causes of constipation in a 9 year old cat. An X-ray isn't as sensitive as ultrasound imaging in detecting a hairball or pathological changes in the gastrointestinal tract and so prior to considering having an enema performed, Fidget's abdomen should be ultrasounded. Did the X-rays reveal excessive feces in Fidget's colon?
