Customer Question
I'm fostering a six...

I'm fostering a six week old kitten from the humane society. She has amoxicillin twice a day and has been getting better

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the kitten?

Now I'm noticing an increased respiratory effort and she doesn't seem to be hungry

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the kitten seem to hurt?

She seems air hungry but not in pain

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. No obvious pain. What is the kitten's name?

Her nose gets crusty

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the kitten?

I knew she had a respiratory thing when I took her, the other kitten in the group died of it. I'm most worried about anemia. Her gums are white. She had that when I got her too, but now she is breathing hard, mouth breathing and not eating
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Her eyes are clear and she is responsive
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

Ok, thank you for that information.

The open mouth breathing is very concerning.

If you area able to give her steam treatments (hold her in a steamy bathroom while running a hot shower) that can help to open up her congestion. Using a suction device for a baby to clear her nostrils can also be helpful.

Once her nose is bit more clear, I would offer her a variety of foods (canned, warmed, tuna, etc).

Her breathing has calmed down some, not open mouthed anymore. Do you think I need something stronger than amoxicillin? I've had her 4 days and she seemed to be getting stronger before. I'm not sure what caused her decline!
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

That was my other thought as well, she may need another medication in addition to the amoxicillin. Kittens that decline quickly (esp with open mouth breathing) may either be severely congested in the sinuses, or may be developing pneumonia.

I listened to her lungs with a stethoscope and they sound clear to me. Her heart is very rapid though! I'll take her back to the humane society tomorrow. They probably will keep her since she is so ill. I really hope she makes it! She isn't mouth breathing anymore. Her nose is still running though.
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

I'm glad to hear that her lungs sound clear. Try the steam treatment/suction to try opening her sinuses.

If you have plain saline, and you can safely burrito her into a towel, you can try dripping it up her nose to break up the congestion as well.

Could the anemia be the problem? I know she was eating like a champ yesterday. I clean her nose. She didn't like it, but she still had some spunk!
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I've seen her eat the previous 3 days
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
She's still breathing hard but it's through her nose now at least!
Cat Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Cat Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

The anemia will cause her to feel weak, make it more difficult to regulate her temperature, and make it harder for her to oxygenate her body well.

It sounds like she's making progress.

Now to see if she will eat for you. Keep her warm tonight!

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am here to answer all the questions you have. If you have no other questions, I would greatly appreciate your positive review (5 stars). Your review helps connect Experts with other customers so your input is highly appreciated, and it is the only way that I am compensated. Thank you!
