Hello, I'm Dr. Deb and will do my best to help with this concern about Rebel.

It may (or may not) surprise you to know that constipation issues are somewhat commonly seen in older cats. I have a few suggestions which may help; I'll thank you in advance for your patience while I type back a response since my answers tend to be on the lengthy side.

last 24 hours we have added small amount of benifiber to H2O, was wondering about possibility of giving sennisides

Over the counter oral options may not be quite effective enough if he's been constipated for more than 3 days but I'll list them to be complete. And, you can give more than one thing at a time:

1. Hairball laxatives such as Laxatone or Laxaire which are brand names but every pet or grain store will carry these products. I usually suggest 1-2 inches 2-3 times a day.

2. Canned pumpkin (NOT the pie mix) at a dose of 1/4-1/2 tsp per day. You migh tbe surprised how well many cats like the taste of it although obviously not all of them do.

3. Over the counter, human Miralax (polylethylene glycol 3350 aka macrogol 3350) at a dose of 1/8th-1/4th tsp daily which can be increased until soft stools are produced. This option is probably what I'd suggest first if he's still eating (which, hopefully, he is).

4. Raw bran flakes (wheat bran, not cereal) in canned food 1/4-1/2 tsp daily.

He may need an enema first to get things moving along but care should be taken to read the ingredient list since those with phosphate can kills cats. An acceptable one would be a pediatric glycerin suppository: http://pedia-lax.com/products/liquid-glycerin-suppositories

If none of the above suggestions are effective, then he may need to be seen by your vet.

I hope this helps, Deb

what about what we have, benifiber and sennisides ?

Additional fiber may be of benefit if the patient isn't terribly constipated (just for 1-2 days) but seems to be more effective in preventing future episodes.

I don't have experience with sennisides use in cats but I'd be a little wary about using it since cats are sensitive to so many otc products; I wouldn't want to cause harm.
