My cat became lethargic and quit eating her usual food two weeks ago. I came home and she was not eating or drinking yesterday. I took her to a vet here in Encinitas, ca. They did all the blood tests that came in negative for anything functionally wrong with her, but she is anemic and she is not making red blood cells. They gave her a round of antibiotics but her RBC's were normal except for the anemia. Now they are suggesting I take her to a specialist. What do you think?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help your cat. What is the cat's name and age?
Customer: Bungee and she is 14 years old. She is anemic, not making RBC's.
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Bungee?
Customer: Two months ago, I moved in with my daughter. She has an older cat. Could the added stress be causing the anemia? The cats have had no contact with each other.

Thanks for trusting me to help you and your pet today. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 30 years of experience and would be happy work with you but need a bit more information to better assist you if you don’t mind.

Did they do any sort of imaging like xray or ultrasound?

Do you have a copy of the bloodwork results you could share?

The vet I took her to yesterday said she was negative on feline leukemia, etc. All her blood work was normal except for the anemia. They did not xray or ultrasound.
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
All blood work, including kidney function, etc. was normal.
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Do you know how low the RBC's were? Or what the HCT was?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I do not know the RBC's count or Hct. Sorry
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
They just said, she had stopped making RBC's.
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

Is she visibly pale when you look at her gums?

Has she been losing weight?

Did they say if her kidney values were all normal?

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
They said her kidney function was normal. All the blood work came in negative for anything other than the anemia. I don't know enough to talk , but my daughter says the likes to be groomed and held but not for very long, unlike her usual behavior. Could she be in pain, have arthritis? She did have a fever.
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
are you still there?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
could she be allergic?
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

If she had a fever, there must be an infection or an inflammatory process going on internally. A diagnostic imaging with xray and ultrasound should be performed looking for the source of the fever.

Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

At her age, she could have mild arthritis, but it should not cause a fever. Allergies would not be expected to cause anemia or fever.

They gave her 3 week supply of antibiotic and suggested an internist.
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

If they are not able to perform imaging, a specialist would be the next step to get to a diagnosis.

I would not be comfortable just treating her with antibiotics when we don't know what the source of the fever is.

Her left eye is draining, but does because of a defect. Could this be every worse than it looks?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
At any rate, thank you.
Cat Veterinarian: petdrz, Veterinarian replied 3 months ago

It is hard to say. If there was something like pancreatitis causing the fever, it may be treatable, but if for instance there was an abdominal mass, it may be more serious.
