My dog has had diarrhea for about a month now with no let up. She is losing weight but still is very playful. She has been to the vet and they came back to say she had no parasites. I don't know what else there may be

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

What does the diarrhea look like? Any blood?

What tests did her vet do? Only test for parasites?

Did they use any treatments besides antibiotics?

Are her gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

Could she have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

There has been no blood in the stool, but we have mostly found wipes that have been eaten.

Yes, the only test the vet did was for parasites. And they did not use any other treatments than the antibiotics

Her gums are turning white and the gums are no longer moist but sticky.

The only things she could have gotten is paper towels, diapers, or baby wipes

Cat Veterinarian: Dr. B., Cat Veterinarian replied 6 months ago

Oh dear,

Now if she is eating those items certainly isn't going to help her gut and stool formation. So, we need to keep those away from her. That said, if her gums are really turning white then we have a serious issue here. Paling of the gums is a sign of internal bleeding, anemia, or circulatory compromise from gut blockage. So, her vet's minimal testing means we cannot fully rule out bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, or protozoa infections; I'd be worried we hav ea partial blockage. And diapers are notorious for this.

So, in this case we cannot afford her gums going white and thus we want her seen again right away. We need her vet potentially xraying to make sure we don't have a partial obstruction damaging her gut (as it can mean extensive surgery to remove damaged GI or even fatal peritonitis). If they are open soon, just give her water and withhold food so we don’t' have any delay in sedating. Otherwise, if we have >12 hours til they are open, you can try some supportive care. To do so, you can give an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset/diarrhea. Fiber (ie canned pumpkin) and OTC probiotics (ie Benebac, Fortiflora) can be added to these meals to firm those loose stools quicker, try to push anything caught through, and support digestion..

Furthermore if she is very loose, you can consider trying Kaolin/Kaopectate (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/kaolin-and-pectin-kapectolin-k-p)). This is available OTC at most pharmacies. Otherwise, Propectalin, Canikur, Fast Balance, and Protexin Pro-Fiber (all OTC at vets, pet stores, and even Amazon) would be another option. All will slow diarrhea and those last ones have the added bonus of providing support to the delicate good GI bacteria. So, these can be used as a short-term means of soothing her upset GI.

Overall, her gum stickiness tells us she is getting dehydrated but paling gums is an urgent sign of a much bigger issue. So, we do need her rechecked now and an x-ray is indicated. If she has a blockage it needs to be addressed. If that is clear then a full stool sample test (for bacteria, viruses, protozoa) should be done so we can address this properly for her.

All the best,

Dr. B.
